The Phone Call Problem: Why B2B Transactions Stay Analog

The production equipment rental industry runs on phone calls and PDF quotes. Not because the people in it are technologically backward — many of them are running sophisticated businesses. It stays analog because the analog system optimizes for something that digital platforms typically destroy: relationship-based trust.

When a rental house picks up the phone, they know who's calling. They know their payment history, how they treat gear, whether they return things on time. That knowledge is informal, unstructured, and lives in one person's head. It's also incredibly valuable.

A platform that replaces phone calls with a search bar has to replace 30 years of "I know Klaus, he always delivers clean gear" with something systemic. That's not a technology problem. That's an institutional design problem.
